As I watch Israeli reservists leave their homes to return to military service, doctors open private clinics to treat people free of charge, hotels give rooms to whole communities displaced by war and death, I sit in my home thankfully safe and hatefully safe. So grateful to be safe and that my family is safe and yet, I wish I could find a way to share the pain and the fear of our brothers and sisters throughout Israel who are not safe.
I am not without purpose, I have a family to care for and protect as my first responsibility, and I do it gratefully and willingly. I can make donations or cook hot meals for those who need, but it feels so little compared to how much others are giving. But I believe we each have a skill and serve a purpose that shines all the brighter and helps all the more when it’s embraced with intention and not rejected by self-doubt or consumed with feelings of inadequacy. My skill, my passion is that of a writer. And if even a few words I write, one after the other, can share truth, give hope, or help others feel understood then that’s what I can do.
Write for hope, write for truth.
Am Yisrael Hai,
Avigail
